New version of Simply Remind Me now available

Earlier this week, I gave a sneak preview of version 3 of Simply Remind Me – my free e-mail and simple text reminder app.

The new version is now live and ready to welcome new and existing users.

With the new version, there is also a brand-new website. The site is similar in content as the previous one (if it ain’t broke, why fix it?) but has a bolder and more modern look.

Sneak Preview of Simply Remind Me, version 3

It’s been four years since the last update to Simply Remind Me – my free e-mail and SMS (text message) reminders app. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020, sign-ups have increased significantly. It’s therefore a perfect time for a refresh and an update.

This blog post shows you a preview of the new-look Simply Remind Me – version 3 – launching soon.

There are some major changes – such as a new look layout – but several subtle changes to improve your experience using the app.

Apple release macOS Big Sur... but can you get it?

Apple today released the biggest update to macOS in recent years.

It’s so big in fact, it no longer carries the OS X (version 10) moniker it has carried since the early 2000s. No sur; Big Sur carries an all-new version 11.

The OS update clocks in at 12.1GB on my 2016 MacBook Pro – a hefty update that appears to have broken Apple’s update servers shortly after it was released. Not a great look for Apple.

Upgrade Ubuntu Server 16.04 to 18.04

The Ubuntu team will this week release Ubuntu Server 18.04.1, the first minor revision to 18.04 since its release on April 26th.

Following the release on July 26th*, Ubuntu 16.04 machines everywhere will soon start to get notifications that a new release is available to upgrade to.

In this article, I’ll show you how to upgrade Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 using the command-line. This can be used on all Ubuntu derivatives, but is mostly aimed at Server installs that do not have a graphical interface.

MariaDB 10.1 is Generally Available

The open-source database fork of MySQL, started by MySQL’s original developer – MariaDB – have certified their latest release of the 10.1 series (10.1.8) as Generally Available – i.e. suitable for production use.

MariaDB 10.1 is a drop-in, binary replacement for MySQL for those that want a quicker development cycle and don’t want to have their hands tied by Oracle, who know own the MySQL project.

I’ve already upgraded my server to this release, and if any of the below sound good to you – so should you.
